Yavn's Final Message from VMK

Live and direct from VMK Central, here's Yavn with a final mesage to the Kingdom...

Not Goodbye...

Well here we are, at the end of a long journey. First, I'd like to say thank you for your notes, emails and letters – they have all made their way to me. I too have many great memories, and like you, I have a great appreciation of VMK.

I wish I could list out my favorite VMK memories and moments, but there are so many it's impossible to list them all. Of course something that I get asked over and over again is what inspired you to make VMK. For each of us it started with a love of the Disney Parks, and in my case it was a book...

The Big Blue Book

I was 11 years old when I went to see a Disney stage show. I don't remember the details of the show, only that each family that attended received a big blue book. In my family, I ended up with the book and spent many, many nights reading it. Over and over again.

The book was called "Disneyland, The First Quarter Century."

The book showcased the first 25 years of the Park with a few pages of the then upcoming Big Thunder Mountain. Many of the attractions shown were still in the Park, but a few that caught my eye (Flying Saucers, Phantom Boats and Carousel of Progress) made me wish I could turn back the clock.

Yavn took inspiration for VMK from this book about Disneyland.

I spent so much time visiting and reading about Disneyland that I started to know every inch of it, past and present. But Disneyland wasn't my only passion, I was also a huge fan of video games, and I always thought it would be cool to make a computerized version of Disneyland. Of course I had no idea what that would mean until much later...

What amazes me now is the way that Disneyland found its way to the internet, and again is showing the world an exciting new frontier – a digital frontier, that lives on the internet.

Now VMK is going away. Just like several attractions at Disneyland that have come and gone, VMK was just the first step in a new age of online attractions. However unlike Disneyland, VMK was never built to run forever. VMK was just the beginning – who knows what we will imagine next!

Still we've had a great time, shared some great memories – and years from now, someone will mention VMK in a conversation and you can smile and say proudly "Yeah, I played it."

Thank You!

Finally, we'd like to give all our players 30 days of unlimited access to both Pirates of the Caribbean Online and Toontown Online. If you're interested in this offer, email us at: vmk@disneyonline.com.

Important: Please make sure you provide your VMK character name to be eligible (this is the character name you played as in VMK -- we don't need your login, password or other info, just your character name).

And Thank YOU!

It takes a great many people to create, build and run a virtual Park. I'd like to thank Team VMK, all of our friends and partners at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom – but most of all, you.

I ask one last favor of all of you – remember VMK as one step along the journey. Like I said, in the history of the Disney Parks, we've seen attractions go away to be replaced by better experiences. Still those older attractions are talked about today just as fondly as they were when they were opened (Flying Saucers, House Of The Future, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Walt Disney World, America Sings).

Let's keep a special place in our hearts and minds for VMK and remember the fun, friends and fantasy while we keep an eye toward the great things to come.

Remember this is farewell, not goodbye! After some much needed rest you'll probably catch me sailing the virtual seas in Pirates, or flying around in Pixie Hollow.

Thanks for playing VMK,
Yavn

Players Beware: POTC May Be Promotion as Well

As reported in an earlier post, it appears that Pirates of the Caribbean Online will not be here to stay either...will look out for more corroboration to this effect...

"The most response we got from what appeared to be a Disney Official was a brief conversation that basically said the exact same thing verbatim about VMK being a promotion. I asked about other games and social networks and got an interesting response that Disney Games are promotional vehicles for merchandising, including Pirates of the Caribbean!"

VMK - Kellogg's Ad - August 2005

No mention here of Disneyland's 50th Anniversary...or that VMK was a promotion that would end, what is mentioned is that VMK is an online game...

VMK First Look from June 2005 - No Reference to Promotion

"I was looking at some of our old issues of "Disney Adventures" from 2005 & 2006. I know when we created our avatars in VMK we received 50th shirts but I do not see any reference to the 50th anniversary in the advertisements.  So how would a child know this game was a promotion and would end?..."

Take a look at this...
No reference to the 50th Anniversary, no reference to VMK being a promotion...as MomsGoneGoofy notes above, how would a child (or parent) have any idea that this game was temporary?

Messages are Being Fowarded Upward...

I saw this on another site. One of the members got a much more personalized response from someone at VMK! Especially notice the part in bold:

Hi <name removed>,

Thanks for writing.

I know this is a difficult time for our players/Guests, and it is for us
too. Unfortunately the decision is set to close Virtual Magic Kingdom on
May 21st, 2008.

There are several factors that went into the decision, although
primarily, as part of the Disneyland 50th Celebration, the
game/promotion has operated well beyond the original time it was planned
to run.

Our resources are now focused on imagining future online worlds,
nonetheless, I have forwarded your email onto our executives here so
they can hear your concerns to keep VMK open.

We appreciate your interest in VMK and hope you continue to enjoy the
game until we close. We have lots of magic left in the game, so please
join us.

Sincerely,

Vince

Disney Guest Services Response

This is the response you might receive when you contact Guest Services...

Thank you for contacting The Walt Disney Company and VMK.

We have received an outpouring of feedback regarding our decision to close VMK. We are overwhelmed by the responses and enthusiasm of our guests, but unfortunately our decision to eventually close VMK is set.
We have explored many different options, including a pay to play model but have decided to focus more of our time on our new virtual worlds coming soon, which we are sure that you will love as much as VMK.

Deciding to close VMK was a very difficult decision for us because we loved creating VMK just as much as you loved playing it. But in a company that encourages innovation and creativity we have decided to "keep moving forward" and exploring where the future takes as, because in the words of Walt Disney, "We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths."

Thank you for being part of this journey with us, and we hope we continue to see you at Disney.com enjoying what we imagine next!

Sincerely,

Your friends at VMK

=======================

Reminder from SaveVMKToday.com

While this is rather disappointing news, PLEASE be aware that this process of petitioning and sending emails will not be a fast journey. Note that for us to have already been given some response from the WDIG company that is tremendous success. Please do not be upset about the recent email, because nobody was expecting WDIG to just bow down, they have thought about closing VMK so its obviously something they are all loyal to. Its OUR job as fans of VMK to change their mind, I fully believe this is possible. They are beginning to listen to the reactions of VMK Closing, and its obviously something they are thinking about. So now is the time to fight back with even MORE emails, MORE signatures, and MORE banners and user created material. SaveVMKToday will be having a major announcement in the upcoming hours, so please stay tuned.

Thanks so much for all of your continuous support, it means a lot knowing we can all make a difference!

Cheers,
Mr.Lunatix (aka AtticusFinch)

VMK Closure FAQ

Source:  VMK FAQ Page

Why is this happening?

As Yavn mentioned in the Newsletter, VMK was created and launched as part of a promotion to celebrate Disneyland's 50th Anniversary.

The game/promotion has ran well beyond the original time it was intended to.

When is the last time I can play VMK?

The game will close Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 at 10:00PM PST (Pacific Standard Time).

Will I still be able to buy VMK Cards and Pins in the Parks?

Yes. You will still be able to buy VMK Cards and Pins at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Parks while supplies last, however after May 21st, 2008 the codes will no longer work in the game.

What will happen to VMK and the website?

The website will remain online for a period to let our Guests know that VMK is closing. You will not be able to log into the game after May 21st, 2008.

What will happen to all my VMK virtual stuff?

Since the virtual items live in VMK, you won't be able to access your VMK items or take them with you to another Disney Online Virtual World.

Why did you disable VMK registration?

Since VMK is closing we are no longer accepting new players. You can still log into VMK using an existing account as long as it is in good standing (that is, you are not banned). If you are banned, once your banned is lifted (and provided it's lifted before the game closes on May 21st) you can still play VMK.

Will there still be new events and items in VMK before the game closes?

VMK will operate as it always has, with new events and items announced up until the game closes at 10:00PM PST on May 21st, 2008.
